WEST CHESTER, PA – Jill Gizzio, founder and owner of internet-based DogToys.com, sat in her West Chester, Pennsylvania office analyzing web site hits – and she made a discovery that would forever change the way pet owners buy dog toys.
The DogToys.com home page gives consumers the option to view products by brand, size, type or breed. Jill was astounded to see the number of consumers opting to shop by breed. More pet owners shopped by breed than brand, size and type combined.
Realizing that she had a glimpse into the buying behaviors of pet owners, an invaluable insight, Jill began creating a system to identify the suitability of a dog toy for the breed. Today, four years later, she calls this system ShopByBreed.
“ShopByBreed is a scientific point-of-sale system,” says Gizzio. “We measure criteria about the dog and the toy, match the two sets of data, and use mathematical formulas to determine which toys are safe and appropriate for all of the 150 plus breeds recognized by the AKC.”
It sounds simple and easy to use.
“It is. I equate it to a shoe size,” says Gizzio. “Once you know your breed’s size, you just look for that number on the products in the store. That product has been evaluated to be safe and appropriate for your dog. And I say product, because this system goes beyond toys. It includes beds, crates, bowls, collars – just about any category you can think.”
ShopByBreed helps manufacturers forecast production and control their inventory levels, and retailers love it, because it takes the guess work out of recommending products. Retailers will also view ShopByBreed as the perfect silent salesperson for its up-selling and cross-selling benefits.
